Lonsdale Quay Exchange

Movement strategy and wayfinding design to meet growing demand at a key transit hub.

Proposed wayfinding design interventions by Steer at Lonsdale Quay Exchange.

Lonsdale Quay Exchange is Vancouver North Shore’s principal public transit hub serving almost 30k passengers daily. Lonsdale Quay and the Shipyards District are a major destination for the city and acts as the gateway to the rest of the region.

Steer formed part of the DIALOG team commissioned to design a major upgrade to the exchange that would create a pedestrian-focused facility putting customer needs at the forefront. The upgrade aims to improve comfort, safety, and accessibility; better integrate the exchange with adjacent neighborhoods; and provide more service for the growing customer demand and transit service expansion including a new Rapid Bus service.

Steer’s role through concept and detailed design stages included: transport engineering design; wayfinding strategy and sign design; customer experience; and pedestrian/cyclist access/movement strategy. The firm was subsequently commissioned to develop the Traffic Management Plan to take the project through construction phases to implementation.
