Kingston University

Integrated wayfinding signage and mapping for the UK’s ‘best new building’

Building signage designed by Steer for Kingston University's campus.

Commissioned by Grafton Architects, we created an indoor and outdoor wayfinding system for this six-storey educational hub in London, UK that houses a library as well as dance studios, event spaces, cafés and roof gardens.

We closely analyzed the architect’s plans, working with the university to understand their aspirations for the new building. We evaluated off-the-shelf products against custom sign solutions, choosing the former for changeable signs such as shelving signage in the library, and the latter for major signs to respect the unique architecture of feature spaces.

The custom signs we created included outdoor monoliths, level directories, and minimalist surface-applied names and maps.
