Cycling is the fastest-growing transport mode in Toronto. To encourage safe travel by bike, the City commissioned Steer to design a new version of their fold-out, portable map to depict Toronto’s 600km+ of bikeways, which includes fully separated cycle tracks, bike lanes, and multi-use trails through natural areas.

The refreshed Toronto Cycling Map builds on the strong cartographic foundation laid by Steer’s Toronto TO360 Wayfinding strategy. The Cycling Map is built upon a Geographic Information System (GIS) base, enabling yearly updates to keep pace with the city’s evolving cycling network.

The cycling map also shares a visual style and nomenclature with the Steer-developed on-street cycling wayfinding system, establishing a consistent standard for how routes are depicted that links the pre-journey and en-route cycling experience. By differentiating bikeways based on the level of separation from other traffic that they afford, the map supports the City’s Vision Zero Road Safety Plan and long-term vision to encourage cycling by users of all abilities.

Now in its fourth edition, the Toronto Cycling Map continues to empower and inspire users to explore their city by bike.
