Better Mapping

Cartography is the art and science of map-making. At Steer, maps inform everything we do — from analysing travel behaviours or planning transit networks to delivering interactive, user-centred wayfinding and information systems. Central to our team’s capabilities are our cartography and geospatial services. We create Better Mapping products for city wayfinding, campuses, parks and neighbourhoods, active transportation and transport networks.

At Steer, the core areas that define our wayfinding practice are information, environment and identity. We combine our understanding of human experience, perception and behaviour to deliver an innovative, user-centred design that helps make our cities, transport systems and public places understandable, accessible and enjoyable for all.

Our work ranges from high-level strategy, via data-driven maps and information systems to detailed design of physical and virtual wayfinding systems at a city, regional, district and neighbourhood scale designing for pedestrian, transport and cycle networks.

How we can help you
Our award-winning team work with a range of clients from local authorities, government and transport agencies to event organisers, stadia, universities, hospitals and retail. Our core offer includes the following:

  • Wayfinding – from geospatial analysis to identify where signs are required to the design and production of end-user maps for wayfinding totems and printed hand-outs

  • Transport information – design of simple, user-centred transport information systems from schematic bus or metro maps to citywide network maps delivered via print and digital channels to promote services and encourage people to make sustainable travel choices

  • Data Visualisation – we apply our design and analytical skills to explain complex spatial concepts, illustrate spatial relationships or visualise a story to capture the imagination.

  • Significant Events – building on our work for the London 2012 Olympic bid, we deliver cartographic support from the bid stage, right through to planning and delivery.
